Creating Connection: Devising A Live Performance

This term, our acting students came together to create a devised performance titled I Believe In鈥 鈥 a piece that celebrates collaboration, imagination and the development of character. Rooted firmly in the work of their first term, the performance became a practical and creative way for students to apply everything they have been learning in the studio and share it with an audience.

The process began with a workshop centred around a single word: connection. Through open discussion and playful exploration, students shared their thoughts, associations and personal interpretations of what connection means to them. As ideas were gathered and linked together, a clear thematic direction began to emerge. Conversations led our actors to reflect on the magic of childhood, the beliefs we hold when we are young, and how those beliefs shift as we move towards adulthood. The group explored what it means to see the world through a child鈥檚 eyes, what we believe in, and how those beliefs evolve as life becomes more complex.

From these discussions, the performance material took shape. Scenes and monologues were selected from a range of contemporary plays, carefully chosen for how they echoed the themes of connection, belief and personal growth. These written pieces were interwoven with devised scenes and original choreography, allowing students to showcase not only their interpretive skills but also their creativity as theatre-makers.

Throughout the term, students have been developing core acting techniques, including freeing the actor鈥檚 voice, imagination and physicality. A strong emphasis has also been placed on working supportively and playfully with others, building trust and collaboration within an ensemble. I Believe In鈥 became the perfect opportunity to bring all of these skills together. Each performer had moments to stand confidently on their own, developing clear and truthful character work, while also contributing to the shared energy and storytelling of the group.

The final performance is a life-affirming piece that reflects both the students鈥 individual journeys and their collective growth as an ensemble. It captures the joy of performing together, the excitement of sharing stories, and the courage it takes to stand in front of an audience and say, 鈥淭his is what I believe in.鈥 With a festive touch of audience participation 鈥 a small nod to the approaching Christmas season 鈥 I Believe In鈥 is a celebration of learning, collaboration and the power of theatre to connect us all.
