Students from 颁厂痴笔础鈥檚 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts 鈥 Drama course recently presented the final performance of their first year on this two-year course: a powerful collaborative devised piece entitled Identification Please.
At the heart of the production was the theatrical technique of verbatim performance, a process in which spoken words are repeated exactly as they were originally said. Verbatim theatre relies on authentic speech patterns, rhythms and language, preserving the honesty and individuality of real voices.

To create the production, students gathered their own source material by interviewing family members, friends and fellow 最新麻豆视频 students. These conversations became the foundation of the performance. After carefully transcribing the interviews word for word, the ensemble began analysing the material to uncover recurring themes and emotional connections.
One theme emerged repeatedly throughout the interviews: identity and the search for self-understanding. Students explored questions surrounding personality, self-perception and human behaviour, drawing inspiration from Sigmund Freud鈥檚 psychoanalytic theories. Alongside this research, they also experimented with AI technology, posing questions about identity and consciousness to generate further material and provoke discussion.

Using these varied sources, the company selected and shaped sections of verbatim text into a layered, non-linear script that combined authentic interview excerpts with philosophical and psychological ideas.
鈥淚t was important to keep in the verbatim habits of ums and urs,鈥 explained Cat, one of the performers. 鈥淚t kept the text truthful to the original interviews.鈥
Once the script had been developed, the students moved into an intensive rehearsal process focused on blocking, emotional exploration and character development. The fragmented and fluid structure of the piece encouraged experimentation, giving performers the freedom to explore movement, vocal dynamics and physical storytelling in order to communicate the emotional depth behind the words.
鈥淚t was challenging from a technical standpoint,鈥 admitted Belenus, another member of the cast. 鈥淭here is not a set narrative, it鈥檚 more spliced-up text. The rehearsal process allowed space for a lot of experimentation and to find the emotion for each moment.鈥

The final production showcased not only the students鈥 performance skills, but also their abilities as researchers, writers and theatre-makers. Through collaboration and creative risk-taking, Identification Please became an insightful exploration of identity, authenticity and human connection, and a fitting culmination of the students鈥 first year of training at 最新麻豆视频.
颁厂痴笔础鈥檚 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts 鈥 Drama course gives students the opportunity to develop as performers, collaborators and original theatre-makers in a professional and supportive environment. From acting and devising to movement, voice and contemporary performance practices, students are encouraged to push creative boundaries and discover their unique artistic voice.
