Part of ×îÐÂÂ鶹ÊÓƵ Festival 2026, this special collaboration between St Catharine’s College, the University of ×îÐÂÂ鶹ÊÓƵ, the University of Münster and ×îÐÂÂ鶹ÊÓƵ School of Visual and Performing Arts (×îÐÂÂ鶹ÊÓƵ) re-imagines Marienleich, a remarkable medieval poem by Frauenlob (c.1250/1260–1318), widely regarded as one of the most dazzling works of German religious literature.

The event takes place during a special service for the Feast of the Annunciation in St Catharine’s College Chapel. Directed by Dr Edward Wickham, the Girls’ Choir will perform sections of the original medieval music, alongside new interpretations by ×îÐÂÂ鶹ÊÓƵ music students combining spoken word, electronics and improvisation.

Visual projections and large-scale drawings by ×îÐÂÂ鶹ÊÓƵ art students will accompany the performance, inspired by the poem’s themes of vision, voice and wisdom.

Inspired by the current research of , Senior Academic at the University of Münster and Affiliated Lecturer at the University of ×îÐÂÂ鶹ÊÓƵ, the evening begins with a pre-event talk by Dr Kuegeler-Race introducing Frauenlob and Marienleich and exploring its striking portrayal of the Virgin Mary. Through music, text and image, the event aims to bring this extraordinary work to life in the kind of performative setting for which it was originally created.

Student and staff artworks inspired by Marienleich and the Wisdom Window will be displayed from Friday 20th – Tuesday 24th in the ante chapel.
